NICK ANDREW

My studio is in part of an old watermill on the upper reaches of the River Wylye, South Wiltshire. My paintings refer to the quiet, intimate, secluded places in the immediate landscape around my studio, places that I can get to know well, observing changes from day to day and season to season. I would like to think that I convey through my paintings this sense of quietness and 'solitary involvement' with the landscape.

As well as the water- meadows and nearby forest, I am fascinated by the river, lakes and ponds as a focus of inquiry and source of ideas, looking in particular for aspects of movement, rhythm, pattern, depth and multi-layering.

Most of the paintings are carried out in the studio, each piece of work is developed from a variety of references : sketches, photos, notes and memory. The process is physical, uncertain but exciting, predominately intuitive, and primarily concerned with one of the most basic instincts: mark-making.
