CHARLOTTE CORNISH
The dominant theme of my work is the nature of human experience. Creating tensions and harmonies through the use of colour and form, I try to communicate visually a sense of what it feels like to be alive.

Circles have been a recurring form in my work, as I explore the capacity that these forms have to operate symbolically. Through the relationships of the circles, I try to create a visual parallel to relationships in life; with people, experiences and feelings. Multi-layering the paint, with the overlapping areas visible at the edges of the paintings, exposes the physical history of the painting, the layers suggesting the complexities of human experience.

Although the themes within the paintings and prints are based on personal experience, I hope to communicate something universal about what it feels like to be alive. The titles provide a hint to some of the themes I am exploring, but I hope that the work can evoke individual personal reactions and resonances within the viewer.
