BRIAN LANCASTER
I would consider my work to be classed in the category of being typical British, traditional watercolours. Using relatively muted colours, painting loosely but realistically, my main interest lies in the atmospheric appearance of the subject and is the crucial unifying ingredient. As I paint fairly rapidly, the spontaneity is very important. I find that I spend far longer looking for subjects than painting them. One of my guiding beliefs is that if one is indifferent in choice of subject, you end up with indifferent painting.

Another of my principles is to keep as open a mind as possible as to subject matter and though I do tend to favour industrial/architectural themes try very hard not to fall into the trap of becoming known as a painter of this or that. I take more of an interest in the lighting rather than the content and this is what I try to convey to the best of my ability.
